My first experience in Africa

by martina

As this was my first experience of job shadowing in a country belonging to a continent other than Europe, I was expecting to be disoriented and to experience a real inter-cultural exchange. I hoped to be able to participate in the workshops planned in the framework of the DYT project, as well as to get to know better the functioning of the host association.

Yes, all my expectations were fully met : I was able to get in touch with the local population, as well as to enjoy the culture and lifestyle of the country, especially of the town of Kisumu.

We were able to carry out the workshops planned for the project - and this went even further than I expected (we did indeed carry out the two cycles of workshops). By being in contact with the staff of the host association during the whole job shadowing period, I understood better the functioning, the objectives and the way of working with the local public.

I think what worked best was the fact that we complemented the staff of the host association - people with whom we were able to set up the workshops planned by the project. I was able to learn from them, especially about how they approach the local youth, the methods they use to interact with them.

I think this complementarity is what worked best and made the workshops a real success.
